SANITATION IN TEMA GHANA

Since the year 1990, sanitation has become a major issue in Ghana which the government and even the W.H.O (World Health Organisation ) still finding a solution. However, Ghana looks out on significant limitations to gathering the provocation of providing adequate water and sanitation for its urban dwellers.

A BRIEF ANALYSES Of Tema

Tema could be considered as one of the most industralized cities in Ghana, which has really contributed to the nations development.

Aside that role the main harbour plays a leading role in the country's development. Majority of the country's consumables are produced by most of the industries in Tema.

Moreover, since Tema is considered as one of the most industralized cities in Accra, it could also be counted as one of the cities that has founded to the development of the country, this is because most goods are brought into the country through the main harbour. This has made many foreign people to establish their companies in Tema.

Again, Tema has the main production of oil, i.e Tema Oil Refinery - (TOR) which is Ghana's only refinery established in Ghana in the year 1963 to enhance the country's economic, investment and development programs. Crude oil is used as refinery's main raw materials for production. The refinery is situated in Tema about 24 kilometres east of capital, Accra.

Moreover, the establishment of Ghacem limited produce a major role in Ghana's development. GHACEM was founded by the government of Ghana in collaboration Norcem as a Norway, on August 30th 1967. GHACEM has been producing more than 30 million tons of cement and has been Ghana's biggest manufacturer of Cement and supply the Nation with good price.

INTRODUCTION

The major challenge in west Africa (precisely Ghana ) has been the issue of sanitation and waste management. However, poor sanitation has a remarkable effect on the population and the economy of the country.

CONTENT

To the understanding of many people or individuals, sanitation has been explained as the maintenance of hygienic conditions through service such as garbage collection and waste water disposal such as gutters, but in most of the communities in Tema lack gutters so they dispose off waste water anyhow.

An interview was conducted with some of the residents in some part of Tema about how they cope in their areas without having gutters around, but most of the residence complained bitterly how their areas flood when it rains.

Pointing out gutters as an issue to sanitation, the lack of Dustbins is also a major factor, most communities lack dustbins or waste collections. There are a few garbage trucks which moves around to some areas to collect their garbage due to this most people do not get the benefit to dump off their garbage. All these issue makes a lot of places untidy, and these can contribute to low economic growth in the country's development.

EffECTS

Poor sanitation has a negative impact and effect on the Nation as well as the people in the country and can also bring down the economy of the country.

These are some of the bad impacts of poor sanitation in Tema, since Tema is considered as one of the most industralized cities in Ghana and has really counted to the development of the nation, Foreigners who has built industries and employed people will be discouraged, due to this they may consider leaving the country to their country to establish their companies there.

Again, residents may contract diseases and illness such as cholera, diarrhoea, maleria etc...  When this happens the burden might be upon the government.

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS

1. People should be well educated on sanitation and to be be told the effects

2. Sanitation workers such as the Zoom lions should be well catered for and motivated to work harder

3. Garbage trucks should be directed to most places and dust bins to be provided.

4. Again, community labour could be organised by the Assembly man to allow the various communities to be cleaned by the residents of the various communities.

CONCLUSION

Sanitation in the Accra (Tema metropolitan ) is very poor and could bring down the development and the economy of the country.
