Policewoman’s murder: One suspect sustained gunshot wound – Police

The Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, DSP, Mohammed Yusif Tanko has said that one of the five suspects arrested over the killing of a policewoman in the Northern Region sustained a gunshot injury.

According to him, the suspect was shot in the course of the arrest because he threatened the life of the policemen who were making the arrest.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, DSP Yusif Tanko said the police only opened fire as a form of self-defence and also to facilitate the arrest of the suspect.

“He was resisting arrest and sustained the bullet injury. The Police can open fire on a suspect under various circumstances, one is when they put the lives of the officers in danger, another is when the suspect has committed a very serious crime and is attempting to escape,” he said.

Five persons have been arrested in connection with the Tuesday evening killing of a policewoman, Agatha Narbin, by suspected gunmen at Tamale in the Northern Region.

Sources close to the Tamale Police Command say the five are part of a gang who camped in the Aboabo forest in Tamale.

The arrests were effected by a joint Police-Military operation in the forest upon intelligence.

Reports indicate that armed men in military clothes opened fire at a police checkpoint on the Kumbungu road in the Northern Region killing the policewoman in the process.
