The Cluster on Decentralisation and Citizens’ Participation has organized a walk in Tamale to sensitise the public about The Affirmative Action Bill and to further challenge President Akufo-Addo to use his position as the African Union Gender Champion and Co-Chair of the Sustainable Development Goals, to double his efforts towards achieving the set targets in seeing to the passage the Affirmative Action Bill.
The walk is the second in a series of events targeted at expediting the passage of the Bill which seeks at least 40 percent female representation in Parliament.
Some NGOs, students, women’s organizations and the general public joined the walk.
The Advocacy walk started from The Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium through Nyohini RoundAbout, ZogbeliTraffic, Picona, Barclays Bank, Town Centre, and Cal Bank to Water Works Road, Choggu RoundAbout and back to the Sports Stadium.
Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu interrupted his football game to show support for the cause.
In June this year, Guinea Bissau passed their Gender Equality Law and subsequently appointed 50 percent women and 50 percent men to cabinet positions. Other African countries like Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa have demonstrated how their governments have been committed to ensuring gender equality within their political space.
